As roadside billboards evolve to capture drivers' attention more than ever before, the question raises whether outdoor billboard advertising at or near roadsides drives to distraction.

ADVERTS or "Assessing Distraction of Vehicle drivers in Europe from Roadside Technology-based Signage" is a project commissioned by CEDR, the European platform for cooperation between national road authorities. A consortium of three research institutes (SWOV, TRL and Vias institute) has been appointed to work on the ADVERTS project.

The ADVERTS project has received funding under the CEDR Transnational Road Research Programme - Call Safety 2016 from the following European countries:  Belgium-Flanders, Ireland, Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden and United Kingdom.

Throughout the project we seek to informing national road authorities across Europe on the issues related to distraction from roadside billboards and on the best-practices in the context of a safe system approach.

The ADVERTS project was started in September 2017 and will be concluded in February 2019 with an event on which the results of our research activities and our recommendations will be presented.
